BUILDING A NURSERY

With House of Morrison’s Director of Operations, Andrew Morrison

First off, how does it feel to be a Father?

AM: I have never been so happy in my life, I just love her so much my heart hurts.

Talk us through your creative thoughts and vision when creating the “Adler Console”

I started by asking a lot of questions and thinking about how the console would be used. Babies have a lot of things and I wanted to make sure that it was functionable. From there, I knew it was going to need to have oversized drawers, be a little bit taller to act as a changing station and also have easy access to diapers, throws and toys.

I also wanted to design a piece that was timeless, that I could see her having as a legacy piece growing up. I stayed with a neutral pallet of White Oak Natural wood with an inset Ivory leather. Round peg legs and open slatted shelf added a soft, airiness that was never going to overpower a room. The brass knobs added a hint of femininity that every little girl will love.

Now take us through the process behind making the rocker.

First off, I have to thank my wife Rachel for trusting me in this process. This chair was really designed with her in mind knowing this is where she is going to be spending a large amount of her time with the baby. I knew she was going to need extra lower back support, a high back, comfy seat cushion and a place to rest her head after long days.

After understanding the function, I pretty seamlessly had this idea of doing a modern play on a traditional wing back chair. I think some of the best designs come from a twist on the classics. A walnut wood, rocking base would add that unexpected twist. A washed mossy linen with a cross stitch detail would finish out the upholstery design.

You draw up pieces all the time, how was this process different?

I was so nervous! This sounds so silly, but I have such an emotional connection to these pieces. I spent a lot more time with our manufacturing and upholstery teams to make sure they came out perfect. It was definitely my first taste of being an overbearing parent and I know our team is glad to be done.

I just hope one day when Adler is older, she can say this was the first gift from my dad

What does your new day to day look like?

My new day is longer but also more balanced. We have such an amazing team at both DMI and House of Morrison that I have leaned heavily into. Everyone has really taken ownership of their roles and been so supportive during this adjustment period. At night, I get to come home and play a different role providing as much support as I can. Rachel is real rockstar though.

What is next for House of Morrison?

I am really excited to announce that we have been working on a vintage collection that we will launch this year. The focus is on coffee tables, consoles, side tables and accessories. This will go in conjunction with our ready to ship program to help with the ever increasing lead times.
